Yvon Chouinard

Chouinard developed Patagonia through an existing climbing-equipment business and the growth of its clothing sales. Family ownership and reinvested earnings supported its independence, with borrowing and difficult trading periods also part of the history. In 2022 the family transferred ownership to a purpose trust and the Holdfast Collective. The distinctive funding lesson is the ability to choose an ownership structure after building a viable operating company.
