Small island (2004)

Hortense and Gilbert come from Jamaica to a London that has taught them to expect recognition and then withholds it. Their landlady and her husband have stories of their own, and the four voices expose how differently the same encounter can be understood. Set around 1948, this funny, painful novel makes housing, work and marriage part of postwar migration. Racism has practical consequences rather than functioning as background atmosphere.
