An unusual weapon draws Harry Hole towards a case that moves between contemporary Norway and the country's wartime history. Don Bartlett's translation carries a substantial thriller in which loyalties have survived long after the events that formed them. The changing periods ask for attention, and this is a later Hole novel. Its place here rests on the pressure of contested memory, rather than the idea that a detective can deliver an uncomplicated national account.
