Death in Breslau (2008)

Written in Polish, this novel follows Eberhard Mock in the German city then called Breslau, now Wrocław. That distinction matters: its violent investigation takes place as Nazi power is tightening, with little comfort in the detective's own conduct. Danusia Stok translates a dense, grim historical crime story. Read for the instability of police authority within that particular period, and expect graphic brutality rather than a reassuring investigator.
