Two marshals in their fifties have a long friendship, a dangerous job and feelings they have become rather good at sidestepping. Dragons and a murder inquiry supply the adventure; menopause, family expectations and retirement plans give the romance its particular texture. There is explicit intimacy. A lively fantasy choice with some early world-building to absorb, rather than a quiet contemporary story with an older couple added.
