Darren Mathews drives Highway 59 into Lark, East Texas, to investigate two killings that local people cannot separate from race, property and allegiance. Locke makes the road a link between communities with very different ideas about who belongs and whose account deserves belief. Mathews is both a Black Texas Ranger and a man with roots in the region, a combination that changes the encounters available to him. A tense choice for the social geography of a case.
