Nadia Boulanger

Aaron Copland's surviving tribute to Boulanger makes this more than a famous teacher's list of famous pupils. His study with her in France became a formative relationship, while her wider teaching brought musicians with very different ambitions into sustained contact with technique and musical judgement. Boulanger is especially rewarding for readers interested in how sustained criticism and a deep knowledge of music can help a composer develop a distinctive set of choices.
