A New York writer's correspondence with a London bookseller turns ordering second-hand books into a long friendship. The packages, letters and book-lined rooms offer exactly the sort of domestic ritual a slow Sunday can accommodate. Its passage of years brings loss as well as affection; the comfort lies in sustained attention between people.
