Primo Levi

A working chemist as well as a major writer, Levi made material substances part of literature's structure. The Periodic Table uses chemical elements to organise stories of work, persecution, memory and observation. Chemistry supplies particular problems and habits of judgement, not just decorative metaphors. The connection is most rewarding when read closely: the difficulty of identifying a substance becomes a way to think about the limits of understanding a life.
