Nightingale's nursing and reform work gained another instrument in statistics. She analysed army mortality and used diagrams to make preventable deaths legible to officials who might never study a table of figures. William Farr and other collaborators were important to that statistical work. The connection made care conditions into an argument about institutions and resources: a chart could help move a problem from the ward into a political decision.
