Broken Harbour (2012)

Experienced Dublin detective Mick Kennedy works with newcomer Richie Curran on a devastating family murder. French lets their discussions test what each considers obvious, and makes the senior officer's confidence something a reader can question. The attraction is the relationship between method, judgement and a partner's different perceptions. A long, psychologically intense choice with extensive interviews, rather than a brisk sequence of solved tasks. Violence involving children is central to the case.
