Rao's 1945 work provided fundamental ways to examine the information contained in data. The Cramér-Rao bound, independently associated with Harald Cramér, places a lower limit on the variance of unbiased estimates under stated conditions. It gave statisticians a benchmark for asking how efficiently a method uses the observations available.
