Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel
Person
Born
Bessel's 1838 parallax measurement of 61 Cygni used the small apparent shift produced by Earth's changing position to estimate a star's distance. A precision instrument and repeated observations made a tiny angle informative about an immense distance. Struve and Henderson were pursuing related measurements in the same period, part of a broader observational breakthrough.
