William Sealy Gosset
Person
Born
Working on practical problems at Guinness, Gosset developed methods for reasoning from small samples and published as Student. The t-distribution helped quantify uncertainty when only limited observations were available under the relevant assumptions. Later work, including Fisher's, extended the methods into the forms widely taught and used today.
