Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis

Mahalanobis helped develop large-scale sample surveys and the institutions that could carry them out in India. Carefully designed samples made it possible to estimate conditions across a vast population without counting every household in each enquiry. The achievement depended on survey designers, fieldworkers and the Indian Statistical Institute as well as his statistical ideas.
