The Goblin Emperor (2014)

An isolated young man unexpectedly inherits an imperial throne and has to learn the court's rules without accepting all its cruelties. Katherine Addison makes protocol and appointments matter, while allowing kindness to have practical consequences. This is the gentlest route here, though the names and forms of address need early attention.
