The yellow birds (2012)

Kevin Powers moves between fighting in Iraq and a young man's dislocated life afterwards. The lyrical language draws attention to memory's pressure rather than turning violence into a sequence of thrills. Choose it for the difficulty of telling what happened, with the knowledge that the book is emotionally demanding.
