The Return of the Soldier (1918)

A soldier returns from the First World War with a loss of memory that unsettles the women who know him. Rebecca West makes the household's expectations part of the problem rather than a neutral shelter. This short novel is a precise starting point for the conflict between social normality and what a damaged person can bear.
