A League of Their Own (1992)

Tom Hanks's coach is an effective comic wreck, but the film improves when remembered as a team picture rather than a delivery system for his famous outburst. The players' competing personalities, practical adjustments and sibling friction give the humour several centres. Penny Marshall lets the sport and the performers' timing support each other. Its historical story is fictionalised, yet the comedy's interest in women being good at something remains welcome. The sustained ensemble pleasure is a better reason to revisit than a quotation on a T-shirt.

About A League of Their Own
As America's stock of athletic young men is depleted during World War II, a professional all-female baseball league springs up in the Midwest, funded by publicity-hungry candy maker Walter Harvey. Competitive sisters Dottie Hinson and Kit Keller spar with each other, scout Ernie Capadino and grumpy has-been coach Jimmy Dugan on their way to fame.
