Best in Show (2000)

A dog competition might sound like a very narrow target until the owners start revealing everything except what they intended. Christopher Guest's mock documentary finds status anxiety, romantic history and extravagant self-belief in the pauses around supposedly sensible explanations. Fred Willard's commentary adds a gloriously different kind of ignorance. The dogs supply the occasion; the human need to be recognised supplies the comedy. That division keeps the film useful even to viewers who have never considered the merits of a terrier.
