Waiting for Guffman (1997)
Movie

The amateur company preparing a town-anniversary musical has ambition far beyond its resources, a mismatch that does not require theatre expertise to recognise. Christopher Guest lets interviews and rehearsals expose the distance between self-image and performance. The comedy is most durable when it allows the longing for a bigger life to show through the incompetence. Corky's broad camp characterisation can feel dated, so the appeal rests on the whole ensemble and the wonderfully disproportionate hopes invested in opening night.
