Midnight Run (1988)

The accountant will not stop asking questions and the bounty hunter cannot afford to stop listening. Charles Grodin's calm intrusions and Robert De Niro's mounting irritation keep producing new variations as their cross-country transfer falls apart. Under the action is an unusually durable comic relationship, with distrust slowly acquiring limits. The gunplay and hard language remain part of the package, but the pleasure comes from pauses and incompatible temperaments, rather than needing the whole 1980s action-movie wardrobe to be back in fashion.
