Eilis's romance is one part of building a life after leaving Ireland, alongside work, study, homesickness and the rules of a boarding house. Saoirse Ronan makes her increasing confidence visible in tiny changes of bearing, so choosing a future matters as much as choosing a man. The courtship has old-fashioned sweetness, but the pressure of belonging somewhere keeps it from floating free of ordinary consequences. A gentle way in for viewers who prefer a character's wider journey.
