Basketball is a vocation for Monica, not a hobby she must discard when the romance becomes serious. Her relationship with fellow player Quincy changes alongside their ambitions, family pressures and unequal opportunities, giving the games emotional as well as sporting stakes. Sanaa Lathan keeps Monica's competitive drive vivid. There are familiar melodramatic turns, but the insistence that love must make room for a woman's own career gives this coming-of-age story its staying power.

About Love & Basketball
Monica Wright and Quincy McCall grew up in the same neighborhood and have known each other since childhood. As they grow into adulthood, they fall in love, but they also share another all-consuming passion: basketball. As Quincy and Monica struggle to make their relationship work, they follow separate career paths though high school and college basketball and, they hope, into stardom in big-league professional ball.
