A corridor, a repeated piece of music or the way a character holds a pause can tell you more than a direct declaration. The beauty is inseparable from social pressure: these are people who know they are being observed and cannot easily claim a private space.
For viewers used to dialogue announcing exactly what a couple feels, the restraint is a discovery. Wong Kar-wai makes longing almost physical without promising that saying everything aloud would resolve it. Watch for how repetition changes meaning as the relationship develops.
