Edward Yang makes Taipei's flats, offices and reflective windows hold lives that remain only partly visible to one another. A family can share an address without sharing an understanding of the day. The film's business trip also opens a Tokyo counterpoint, so this is not an exclusively Taipei itinerary. Allow its length for the small observations through which private uncertainty becomes a city-wide rhythm.

About Yi Yi
Each member of a family in Taipei asks hard questions about life's meaning as they live through everyday quandaries. NJ is morose: his brother owes him money, his mother is in a coma, his wife suffers a spiritual crisis when she finds her life a blank and his business partners make bad decisions.
