Hong Kong's food counters, tiny flats and moving walkways make solitude a matter of proximity rather than empty space. Wong Kar-wai lets people develop private rituals while almost touching other lives. Watch the relationship between the takeaway stand and its regular customers: the city supplies repeated meetings without guaranteeing that anyone arrives emotionally on time.
