Metro Manila (2013)
7.6/10on IMDb
Released
A family's move into Manila makes housing, transport and employment inseparable from the question of safety. Sean Ellis gives the father's armoured-truck job a frighteningly concrete place in the city's circulation of money. Its thriller machinery grows out of who can afford to refuse a dangerous offer. The exploitation and violence are harsh, with the city shown through newcomers' narrowing options.

A search for a musician sends young men across Mexico City during the 1999 university strike, turning drift into an uneven education in belonging. Alonso Ruizpalacios uses their comic disagreements to keep the journey from becoming a lecture. The city keeps presenting different social rooms and rules. Its wandering structure is the pleasure, although a viewer wanting a tightly efficient quest may find the detours frustrating.

Lisbon Story (1994)
7.1/10on IMDb
Released
A sound recordist's search through Lisbon makes listening more useful than collecting postcard views. Wim Wenders finds a city's identity in everyday noises, work and musical encounters, with Rüdiger Vogler carrying the practical curiosity. The missing-filmmaker premise gives the wandering a loose direction. An inviting choice if you want urban atmosphere to emerge through the ear as well as the image.

The Hand of God (2021)
7.3/10on IMDb

Paolo Sorrentino's 1980s Naples gathers around family rooms, football expectation, the waterfront and a boy's changing sense of possibility. The city's shared enthusiasms do not prevent private catastrophe, which gives the colourful social world an exposed edge. Choose it for the link between place and an emerging artistic imagination, while recognising that autobiographical fiction is a particular memory rather than a city's complete account.

Left-Handed Girl (2025)
7.3/10on IMDb

A noodle stand in a Taipei night market gives a mother and her daughters a new start that has to be worked for every evening. Shih-Ching Tsou lets selling, eating and moving through crowded lanes bring family tensions into public view. The 2025 film makes lively street texture part of the household's economic problem. Its child's-eye energy does not remove the harder secrets and adult compromises.

Nairobi Half Life (2012)
7.3/10on IMDb
Released
Nairobi presents an aspiring actor with two competing ways of finding a place: performance work and a criminal network. David Tosh Gitonga makes the practical difficulty of staying afloat push those worlds close together. Joseph Wairimu's alertness gives the opportunity and danger a shared human centre. A vigorous urban crime drama whose violence and deprivation belong to this constructed viewpoint, not a complete definition of Nairobi.
