Best Movies of 1990

A personal cross-language ranking of films first publicly released in 1990, spanning American crime cinema, Asian melodrama, intimate British comedy and adventurous independent work. Craft, performance and the complete viewing experience guide the order. Festival premieres count, which places Life Is Sweet and Trust here despite some later commercial dates. Start with Goodfellas for propulsive storytelling, Close-Up for an inventive meeting of documentary and performance, or Metropolitan for conversation-driven comedy.
