Rope (1948)

A fashionable gathering proceeds through drinks, conversation and displays of good breeding, while the audience knows the hosts are concealing something appalling. Hitchcock makes the need to preserve that social performance a source of suspense. The older setting remains easy to enter because the mechanism is familiar: the room keeps talking politely around the question that would bring the evening crashing down.
