Best Documentary Films of All Time

For viewers exploring what nonfiction cinema can do, this selection weighs patient observation, testimony, archive, investigation and the authored essay. It crosses countries and decades, with room for short films and openly reconstructed or animated work where the method makes its limits visible. The ordering reflects editorial judgement about filmmaking and insight, rather than treating documentary images as neutral evidence. Recent films are assessed provisionally alongside work that has endured much longer. Research includes releases available by 30 October 2026; no film enters simply for being new.
