An inherited house takes Maya back to an Indonesian village where ancestry offers danger rather than security. Joko Anwar gives the mystery a vivid texture through shadow-puppet performance and the community's attempts to explain its suffering. The friendship between Maya and Dini provides a welcome human foothold before the violence closes in. Particularly disturbing material involving children makes this one for a robust horror evening.
