The Medium (2021)

A documentary crew follows a shaman's family in Thailand's Isan region, where an apparent inheritance becomes frighteningly uncertain. The early interest in ordinary routines and competing beliefs gives the later collapse something concrete to destroy. Banjong Pisanthanakun draws on research into local practices but tells an invented possession story. Its eventual assault of gore and sexual violence is a major change from the observational opening.
