A shape-changing witch learns village life in nineteenth-century Macedonia by inhabiting different bodies. Goran Stolevski uses that horrific premise to make labour, tenderness and the restrictions placed on women newly visible. The hushed narration invites sympathy rather than keeping the witch at a safe distance. Its bodily violence and sexual cruelty are substantial, but the lasting attraction is its curiosity about being human.
