The Raid's apartment-block assault is the tighter machine. The sequel trades that enclosure for an undercover cop's compromised loyalties, then builds fights with distinct spaces and rhythms, from a muddy prison yard to a kitchen. The improvement is the range of physical storytelling around Iko Uwais, with a crime saga giving the blows consequences beyond survival. At roughly two and a half hours, and extremely bloody, it asks considerably more of the evening.
