Best Bollywood Movies of the 1970s

The decade's angry popular heroes are only one part of this selection. Rural political dramas, intimate romances, urban comedies and ambitious genre mixtures show the range of Hindi cinema between 1970 and 1979. Choose Sholay or Deewaar for forceful popular storytelling, Manthan or Ankur for a different view of power, and Chupke Chupke or Gol Maal when you want exact comic timing. The judgement concerns complete films rather than a star's iconic scenes, with differences in pace and register treated as pleasures to explore.
