Ari Folman's attempt to recover his memories of the 1982 Lebanon War turns animation into a troubling space between testimony, dreams and avoidance. An adult viewer is asked to consider responsibility as well as the private pain of remembering. This is a documentary built around uncertain recollection, not an uncomplicated historical overview. Graphic live-action footage at the end is a crucial, devastating break in its visual language.
