Grave of the Fireflies (1988)

The siblings' struggle to survive wartime Japan becomes even harder to watch when you notice how many ordinary decisions about pride, help and food close around them. The older child's attempt to be a provider is especially painful from an adult perspective. Its precise domestic details resist turning suffering into an abstract message. This is a harrowing film about children, with starvation and death, not a family adventure.
