Shows That Make a City Feel Like Another Main Character

A city starts to matter when it changes a journey, a friendship or the choices somebody can afford. These series find drama in housing, workplaces, borders, neighbourhood memory and the places people gather. Start with Ethos for Istanbul's social distances, High Maintenance for New York's private interiors or Treme for the work of keeping New Orleans alive. Comedy and speculative fiction belong beside the crime dramas here. These are particular imagined cities, sometimes filmed elsewhere, rather than comprehensive portraits of their residents. Look past the landmarks and notice who gets to move freely.
