Ending spoilers. Walter wrote the ominous novel himself, then lost the memories connecting him to its crime. Turning the apparent prophecy into buried guilt is a workable idea. The film overworks it through numerological coincidences and a late reconstruction that must explain both authorship and convenient forgetting. Jim Carrey's anxious intensity is more persuasive than the suggestion that rearranging numbers provides a meaningful trail.
