High Tension (2003)

Ending spoilers. Marie is revealed as the killer she has seemed to pursue. An unreliable account can explain distorted perception; it cannot make the earlier two-vehicle pursuit straightforwardly literal. The switch exchanges the home invasion's sharply physical suspense for a puzzle about which images to discard. The film remains ferociously effective in stretches, but its graphic violence and treatment of desire make this a particularly abrasive example.
