The Village (2004)

Ending spoilers. The supposedly nineteenth-century settlement sits inside a modern reserve, founded by people fleeing violence. That gives the elders' control a clear motive, and the love story still has feeling. The strain comes from a final calendar surprise demanding attention just when Ivy's courage is carrying the film. Her journey is more moving than the effort to keep the outside world's date hidden from the audience.
