Dead to Me (2019)

by tv_binger  •
Dead to Me
TV Show
7.9/10on IMDb
First aired
Grief-group friendship offers a reassuring social script until the things these women cannot say begin to crowd it out. Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini give the concealment emotional weight, so a panicked attempt to behave normally can be both funny and painful. A relatively accessible starting point here, although bereavement, addiction and violence remain central.

Obituary (2023)

Obituary
TV Show
7.0/10on IMDb

Elvira's newspaper pays her per obituary, and she finds a monstrous solution to the shortage of local deaths. The Irish series makes an efficient little work routine out of moral catastrophe. Siobhán Cullen's controlled manner is the attraction: somebody can look entirely practical while the reasoning beneath it has become appalling. Expect murder and bereavement rather than cosy village eccentricity.

Barry (2018)

by tv_binger  •
Barry
TV Show
8.3/10on IMDb
First aired
A hitman's acting class lets him imagine he is becoming a different person while he keeps making other people pay for the old one. Bill Hader's stillness makes the self-deception funnier and more frightening than a parade of wisecracks. The series grows considerably bleaker and more violent; choose it for the collapse of an excuse, rather than a lovable criminal's redemption.

Fargo (2014)

by tv_binger  •
Fargo
TV Show
8.8/10on IMDb
First aired
People explain their own decency while greed, fear and wounded pride lead them somewhere indefensible. The anthology format offers different casts and periods, with a persistent contrast between polite speech and grotesque violence. Season one is a strong introduction to that balance. Its elaborate criminal disasters reward a taste for absurdity, but the deaths are frequently nasty.

Inside No. 9 (2014)

by tv_binger  •
Inside No. 9
TV Show
8.5/10on IMDb
First aired
A confined setting gives people little room to escape the social performance they have started. Each self-contained British story can shift the relationship between a laugh and a threat with remarkable economy. The tone varies widely, from farce to disturbing horror, and some episodes are very bleak. Best when you enjoy being made uncertain about why you found something funny.

Nighty Night (2004)

by tv_binger  •
Nighty Night
TV Show
8.1/10on IMDb
First aired
Jill turns other people's illness, grief and embarrassment into opportunities, trusting that good manners will delay anyone telling her to stop. Julia Davis makes that exploitation horribly precise. This is among the cruellest choices here, with sexual manipulation and serious illness used as comic material. Choose it for the anatomy of social coercion, with very little comforting distance.

Back to Life (2019)

by tv_binger  •
Back to Life
TV Show
7.6/10on IMDb
First aired
Miri returns home after prison to find that every ordinary interaction contains a version of what people think she did. Daisy Haggard finds absurdity in the attempts to resume normal life, while the stigma remains consequential. The humour has more compassion than Nighty Night, but violence, shame and grief sit underneath it. A strong choice for bleakness that still allows a person to change.

Flowers (2016)

by tv_binger  •
Flowers
TV Show
8.0/10on IMDb
First aired
The Flowers family can make even a small domestic exchange feel like a desperate effort to keep something unsaid. The visual eccentricity provides comic distance, then depression and family damage bring it close again. Choose it for controlled performances beneath the oddness. Suicidal distress and severe mental illness make this a much heavier watch than its peculiar household initially suggests.

Patriot (2015)

by tv_binger  •
Patriot
TV Show
8.2/10on IMDb
First aired
An intelligence officer has to keep an industrial-piping job credible while a covert mission dismantles his capacity to function. The corporate presentations and awful practical improvisations are funny because nobody can acknowledge the real problem. Its patient, melancholy rhythm is distinctive. Expect violence and depression, with competence producing exhaustion rather than the usual spy-show glamour.

The White Lotus (2021)

by tv_binger  •
The White Lotus
TV Show
8.0/10on IMDb
First aired
Resort guests can turn a tiny inconvenience into evidence that the world has failed them. The comedy lives in the elaborate social explanations protecting money, status and desire. Different seasons change the setting and relationships, while preserving that uncomfortable observation. Sexual material, cruelty and death make the luxury setting anything but a promise of escapist relaxation.

BEEF (2023)

by tv_binger  •
BEEF
TV Show
8.0/10on IMDb
First aired
The opening season lets two strangers convert a traffic incident into a complete account of everything wrong with their lives. Steven Yeun and Ali Wong make grievance feel both absurdly disproportionate and emotionally recognisable. Watch for the excuses getting more sophisticated as the behaviour gets worse. Rage, violence and suicidal distress put this well beyond a light comedy of bad manners.

Bad Sisters (2022)

by tv_binger  •
Bad Sisters
TV Show
8.2/10on IMDb
First aired
The Garvey sisters' private shorthand gives them a way to endure a man whose cruelty keeps contaminating family occasions. The Irish setting matters through those loyalties and social obligations, rather than decorative scenery. The murder mystery supplies momentum, but the comic pressure comes from sisters managing incompatible versions of events. Coercive control and domestic abuse are substantial parts of the experience.

The End of the F***ing World (2017)

by tv_binger  •
The End of the F***ing World
TV Show
8.0/10on IMDb
First aired
Two teenagers perform toughness because admitting fear or need would leave them exposed. The deadpan narration and awkward conversations make that performance funny without making their situation safe. Its short episodes can be inviting, but abuse, sexual threat and sudden violence are serious. Choose it for brittle self-protection gradually giving way to a more complicated attachment.

Deadloch (2023)

by tv_binger  •
Deadloch
TV Show
7.5/10on IMDb
First aired
A murder investigation collides with local politics, assumptions about respectable people and two detectives who cannot agree on the correct professional manner. The Australian comedy is aggressively sweary and often bodily, with real violence behind the jokes. Begin with the Tasmanian first season; the 2026 return changes the location. Its best laughs expose who has been allowed to define normal behaviour.

Am I Being Unreasonable? (2022)

by tv_binger  •
Am I Being Unreasonable?
TV Show
7.5/10on IMDb
First aired
A new friendship becomes a place where a frustrated mother might finally say what she actually thinks. The problem is deciding which version of events anybody is giving her. Daisy May Cooper's social discomfort makes ordinary exchanges feel unstable before the thriller elements tighten. Bereavement, disturbing secrets and sharp tonal changes make it a choice for uncertainty rather than easy reassurance.

Sweetpea (2024)

by tv_binger  •
Sweetpea
TV Show
7.2/10on IMDb
First aired
Rhiannon turns years of feeling overlooked into a dangerously flattering account of what she deserves. Ella Purnell's performance gives the small humiliations an uncomfortable recognisability, then refuses to make their murderous aftermath harmless. Expect graphic violence and a revenge fantasy whose logic keeps curdling. The dark joke is how readily a grievance can become permission.

After Life (2019)

by tv_binger  •
After Life
TV Show
8.4/10on IMDb
First aired
Tony treats bereavement as permission to say whatever will hurt, while the people around him continue trying to live ordinary lives. The jokes can be blunt and abrasive, with tenderness arriving just as directly. Choose it if you want grief, irritation and small acts of care sharing the same scene. Suicidal thoughts are recurrent, and the sentiment will not suit every taste.

Camping (2016)

by tv_binger  •
Camping
TV Show
7.7/10on IMDb
First aired
The 2016 British original turns an organised countryside break into a struggle over who must accommodate whom. Julia Davis lets controlling behaviour masquerade as a concern for everyone having a lovely time. Sexual discomfort and humiliation are severe, and the characters receive little protection. The attraction is the precise language of somebody insisting a disaster is still a pleasant social occasion.

Search Party (2016)

by tv_binger  •
Search Party
TV Show
7.6/10on IMDb
First aired
A missing-person search gives dissatisfied young adults an opportunity to become important in a story. Their explanations for continuing become increasingly detached from what they are doing. The series makes substantial genre shifts, so the initial social satire is only the entrance. Choose it for escalating self-justification, with violence and deliberate absurdity replacing any promise of reassuring amateur detection.

Perpetual Grace LTD (2019)

by tv_binger  •
Perpetual Grace LTD
TV Show
7.6/10on IMDb
First aired
A plan to exploit a pastor and his wife encounters people far more formidable than the would-be grifter expected. Ben Kingsley and Jacki Weaver give the menace a wonderfully measured delivery, while practical arrangements become absurdly elaborate. Its single season leaves the larger story unresolved. Choose it for strange rhythms and criminal self-deception, accepting that the journey has no completed ending.
