Grief-group friendship offers a reassuring social script until the things these women cannot say begin to crowd it out. Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini give the concealment emotional weight, so a panicked attempt to behave normally can be both funny and painful. A relatively accessible starting point here, although bereavement, addiction and violence remain central.
