The Others (2001)

Drawn curtains, locked doors and sounds from elsewhere in the house make Alejandro Amenábar's gothic chiller a beautifully controlled exercise in uncertainty. Nicole Kidman gives a protective mother enough authority to anchor you while the household's strange rhythms invite doubt. Pick this for atmospheric supernatural suspense, where watching an empty corridor can feel as revealing as hearing an explanation.
