First Cow (2020)

Foraging, milking and making food are allowed to occupy real screen time in this Oregon frontier story. That attention makes Cookie and King-Lu's fragile partnership feel built through shared labour, rather than asserted by the plot. Kelly Reichardt gives you small practical things to follow while the larger economic danger gathers. A strong starting point if you want an intelligible friendship and a tactile world before trying films with less narrative guidance.

About First Cow
In the 1820s, a taciturn loner and skilled cook travels west to Oregon Territory, where he meets a Chinese immigrant also seeking his fortune. Soon the two team up on a dangerous scheme to steal milk from the wealthy landowner’s prized Jersey cow—the first, and only, in the territory.
