The Spirit of the Beehive (1973)
Movie
Released
A child's encounter with Frankenstein spreads into the silent rooms and open country of post-Civil War Spain. Víctor Erice holds on faces, doorways and honey-coloured interiors until ordinary spaces start to carry Ana's fear and curiosity. Her wish to understand the creature gives you an emotional thread even when adults remain opaque. The political echoes add depth, but you can enter through the child's attentive looking without arriving with a history lesson.

About The Spirit of the Beehive
In 1940, in the immediate aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, a young girl living on the Castilian plain is haunted after attending a screening of James Whale's 1931 film Frankenstein and hearing from her sister that the monster is not dead, instead existing as a spirit inhabiting a nearby barn.
