Nearly four hours is a serious commitment, especially with bullying, violence and suicide in the story. Hu Bo makes that duration count by staying close to four people others would rather dismiss. Long tracking shots follow them through confrontations and thwarted departures; blurred backgrounds make it hard to imagine anywhere better just beyond reach.
The desire to travel elsewhere is a foothold through the bleakness. Stay for the stubborn attention to people who are struggling, with no expectation that patience will turn their world cheerful.
