A failed crop, a missing child and a family already primed to suspect sin make the woods frightening without requiring something to leap out of them. Robert Eggers puts the pressure inside the household: blame keeps finding a new target, while harsh daylight offers little comfort. It includes shocks and distressing harm to children and animals, but the film's engine is the steady collapse of trust, spoken in demanding period language.
