Cure (1997)

A detective investigating apparently disconnected murders meets a man whose calm questions are more destabilising than a monster's entrance. Kiyoshi Kurosawa lets conversations stretch until familiar roles seem to drain out of the people having them. The violence can arrive abruptly and is grisly; what lingers is the fear that an ordinary encounter could loosen something fundamental in a person. The uncertainty is purposeful and stays unresolved.
